A method of preparing a protein in a physiologically active form, which method includes providing a source of protein in an at least partially solubilised form; and a refolding agent including an effective amount of a low molecular weight monothiol or derivative thereof; subjecting the solubilised protein to a refolding step, in the presence of the refolding agent.
