PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify management of medium information to improve efficiency in operation of device and prevent inserting mistake of a medium by conducting the data striping process in the RAID controller for the recording medium accommodated in an accommodation rack which is given the common address among each accommodation series. SOLUTION: A controller 90 moves in vertical a transfer holder to extract a medium C from an accommodation rack 1a' of the designated address 1002 and transfer this medium to a drive 41 for the purpose of data write to the medium C. It is then checked whether a fault occurs in the medium C or not during the data writing. If a fault is generated in any one of the media being processed with each drive 41 to 46 during the data writing process depending on the data striping process, a defective medium C and a standby medium C' are automatically replaced and thereafter the standby medium C7 is used as the normal medium to continue the data writing process. Thereby, the number of data recovered by the data recovery process can be reduced.
