In the decorative enamelling of domestic appliances such as ovens, a carrier enamel slip is mixed with a binder solution, applied to the appliance and dried; a synthetic plastics foil in which a vitreous or enamel colour layer is embedded is then applied to the carrier enamel layer and the two layers jointly fired during which the decorative colour layer sinks into the carrier enamel layer and the foil evaporates or burns away without appreciable residue. The binder solution used is an aqueous or alcoholic suspension or solution of organic binders volatile above 200 DEG C., preferably an aqueous suspension of methyl cellulose, polyvinylacetate and/or glycols and other polyhydric alcohols. The drying step is at 80-120 DEG C. which gives a water impermeable surface to give a good grip for the plastics foil. |
