LED with silicone encapsulation

A light-emitting diode emits light in the green to near-UV wavelength range and is encapsulated with one or more silicone compounds 22, 28. The package may include a layer of resilient material 28 surrounded by a rigid outer shell 22, or only a rigid shell with an internal cavity. Either or both layers may comprise silicone. In one embodiment, the LED die itself emits green or blue light. A second embodiment comprises a red-emitting LED die and a compound which fluoresces in the blue or green wavelength range.
