PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the yield of an unsaturated nitrile by a process in which a catalyst to be used for the production of the nitrile by the gas phase catalytic ammoxidation of propane or isobutane is supported on silica of an wt.% within a specified range and contains specified components other than silica. SOLUTION: An unsaturated nitrile is produced by a process in which propane or isobutane is brought into gas phase contact by a catalyst, which is supported on 20-60 wt.% silica, by the composition of a component comprising Mo1Vp XgNbrSntOm, excluding silica. In the formula, X is Te and Sb; Z is one or more elements selected from Ti, W, Cr, Ta, Zr, Y, Y, La, and others and alkaline earth metals; p, q, r, s, t, and n each represent an atomic ratio per mole atom, 0.1<=p<=0.6, 0.01<=q<=0.6, 0.001<=s<=0.3, 0<=t<=1, n is the atomic ration of oxygen determined by the oxidation number of a constituent metal element. |
