PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liq. crystal compsn. having good characteristics such as color purity, reflectivity, etc., high contrast, and wide temp. range of practical use, and capable of lowering operating voltage, and a liq. crystal photo modulation element. SOLUTION: This reflection type liq. crystal display element holds a liq. crystal compsn. showing cholesteric phase 21 and a pillar type structure 20 between substrates 11 and 12 which form ITO(Indium Tin Oxide) electrodes 13 and 14. The liq. crystal compsn. 21 is a chiral nematic liq. crystal compsn. having a refractive index anisotropy of 0.10-0.22, and dielectric constant anisotropy of 5-30 and prepared by adding 10-45 wt.% chiral material to a nematic liq. crystal containing not less than 25% nematic liq. crystal component having a polar group and having an isotropic phase transition temp. of 70-150 deg.C.
