PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To protect the human skin or hair from specific UV radiation by using, as UV filter, a specific cholesteric liquid-crystalline polymer singly or together with a specific compound. SOLUTION: In the preparation of cosmetics or pharmaceuticals intended for protecting the human skin or hair from sunlight, (A) a cholesteric liquid- crystalline polymer alternately having structural unit: X-C(=O) (X is O or NH) in the polymer main chain, either singly, or together with (B) a well-known UV-absorbing compound used e.g. in preparing cosmetics, is used; wherein it is preferable that the component A has constituent unit selected from (i) chiral bifunctional molecular structural unit capable of affording a cholesteric liquid- crystalline phase with a pitch of <450 nm, (ii) an achiral compound such as an aromatic hydroxycarboxylic acid, (iii) a 2nd achiral compound such as an aromatic dicarboxylic acid, and (iv) a 3rd achiral compound such as an aromatic diol.
