A system and a method in which the user (10) can exchange secure data transmissions with other users within (12) or optionally outside (14) of the secured system. The system and method preferably do not require any user intervention for the creation of the secure data, by using transport-layer encryption and authentication technology, including but not limited to the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption and authentication interface (24). In addition, the system and method are suitable for the transmission and displa y of many different types of messages through a unified user interface. Furthermore, the data contained in these different types of messages may optionally be organized for the user for efficient display and data storage. All of these features are provided through a platform which is widely available and which is simple to operate. Thus, the user preferably does not need to install any additional software programs on the user computer, apart from the web browser software program in order to operate the system and method.
