PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To always maintain a texture constant by providing a liquid level sensor for controlling a liquid level of a coating liquid in a sealed doctor chamber disposed axially of a curved surface-like coating medium. SOLUTION: Float type liquid level sensors 16 are provided to control liquid level 7. Here, the two sensors 16 are provided. The two sensors are preferable to control the level between both the sensors. An advantage of the sensors is that even in the case of a transparent coating liquid difficult to be sensed by optical sensors, it can be sensed similarly to a colored sensor. Further, an electric circuit of the sensor as an ignition source can be located away. Instead of the float sensor, an ultrasonic reflection type liquid level sensor can be used. Thus, an apparatus can be simplified, and the sensor can deal with a colored coating liquid difficult to be sensed caused by a strong optical absorption in an optical sensor type. A texture of the material to be coated can be always maintained constant by always holding the level of the coating liquid constant.
