PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a preloading means to give the initial torque to friction clutches for restricting the differential motion from interfering with the car axle and to accomplish the preloading means in the form of subassembly. SOLUTION: A differential device is equipped with a differential mechanism composed of a pinion shaft 35 located in the center of a hollow boss part 33, a pinion 37 borne by the shaft 35, side gears 39 and 41 on the output side meshing with the gear 37, friction clutches 11 and 13 installed between a differential case 3 and the gears 39 and 41, and a preloading means 17 to give the initial torque by pressing the clutches 11 and 13, wherein the preloading means 17 is equipped with hollow retainers 52 and 55 installed inside the boss part 33, a hollow spring 57 installed between them, and stoppers 63 and 67 to locate the retainers 53 and 55 with respect to the boss part 33.
