A data processing apparatus is described which includes a split stack comprising first and second parts. The first part is a register disposed in the processing core of the data processing apparatus, and the second part is a memory device disposed external of the processing core. The processing machine operates to couple the first part to the second part for transferring respective content of said first part and said second part between the first and second parts. A further register may be provided which temporarily stores data from the first part during transfer to the second part.
