Vibration damping materials comprise a composition comprising copolymer of a haloethylene and a vinyl alkanoate of 4 to 6 carbon atoms and a plasticizer for the copolymer, and in intimate contact therewith 10 to 500 parts by weight per 100 parts of said composition of a mixture of 1 to 60 parts by weight of pulverulent, non-graphitic carbon and 99 to 40 parts by weight of graphite in the form of platelets of diameter 10 to 250 microns. Specified copolymers are copolymers of vinyl chloride, vinyl fluoride, vinylidene chloride, 1,1-dichloro-2-fluoro-ethylene and vinylidene chlorofluoride with vinyl acetate, propionate and butyrate. The compositions may also comprise stabilizers for the polymer, e.g. cadmium/barium laurate, tin oleate or epoxidized fatty acid esters; flame proofing agents, e.g. tris-(bromopropyl) phosphite, phosphoramide and antimony trioxide; and mould release agents, e.g. stearic acid; and may be formed into sheets and bonded to metal structural members to suppress vibration thereof. Alternatively the materials may be applied by brushing or trowelling. Many suitable plasticizers are listed and examples describe vibration damping compositions comprising (9) a vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer, carbon, graphite and butyl benzyl phthalate, together with (1 and 2) dibutyl tin mercapto ester, and (2, 5, 6 and 7) antimony trioxide, epoxidized soya bean oil and a barium/cadmium stabilizer.ALSO:Vibration damping materials comprise sheet materials having a coating of vibartion damping material comprising a copolymer of a haloethylene and a vinyl alkanoate of 4 to 6 carbon atoms, a plasticiser for the copolymer and 10 to 500 parts by weight per 100 parts of copolymer and plasticiser of a mixture of 1 to 60 parts by weight of pulverulent non-graphitic carbon and 99 to 40 parts by weight of graphite in the form of platelets of diameter 10 to 250 microns. The compositions may also contain voltaile diluents such as benzene, acetone and isopropanol and may be applied by trowelling, brushing or rolling. The sheet material may be of metal, e.g. steel. Specified copolymers are of vinyl chloride, vinyl fluoride, vinylidene chloride, 1, 1-dichloro-2-fluorethylene or vinylidene chlorofluoride with vinyl acetate, propionate or butyrate; and stabilisers, e.g. barium/cadmium laurate, tin oleate and epoxidised fatty acid esters; flame proofing agents, e.g. tri (bromopropyl) phosphate, phosphoramide and antimony oxide; and release agents, e.g. stearic acid; may also be present. Examples describe compositions of (9) vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymers, butyl benzyl phthalate, graphite and carbon black, together with (1 and 2) dibutyl tin mercaptoester, and (2, 5, 6 and 7) antimony oxide, epoxidised soya bean oil and barium/cadmium stabilisers. |
