A non-magnetic baseplate (1) has a magnetic surface plate (1a). A tool holder (3) and carrier (2) are attached to it by a number of permanent magnets. Air jets in the upper surface of the carrier (2) form an air bearing to reduce friction and allow movement of the tool holder.
