Diorganohydroxy borane preparation comprises hydrolyzing an organohaloborane in a hydrocarbon. Preparation of a diorganohydroxy borane of formula (I) comprises: (a) reacting a compound of formula (II) with a compound of formula (III) at normal pressure to give a compound of formula (IV); (b) extracting (IV) with aprotic, aliphatic and/or aromatic hydrocarbons and optionally separating from remaining solids; (c) reacting (IV) with a nucleophile of formula (V) in an organic medium; and (d) separating off the organic medium and optionally further purifying (I). (C6R<1>5)1+lM(XR<9>p)2-l (I) (C6R<1>5)1+nMR<2>3-n (II) BR<3>R<4>R<5> (III) (C6R<1>5)1+mMR<8>(3-m) (IV) H-XR<9>p (V) R<1>, R<2> and R<7> = H, halogen or 1-20C group; M = group III element; X = group V or VI element; R<9> = H or 1-20C group; p = 1 or 2; l and m = 0 or 1; M<1> = group IV element; n = 0-3; R<3>-R<5> = H, halogen, 1-20C group, OR<6>2 or one or more are NR<7>2; R<6> = 1-20C group; R<8> = H or halogen; and m - 0 or 1.
