1,132,246. Treating carbon black. CABOT CORP. 1 Feb., 1966 [8 Feb., 1965], No. 4302/66. Heading C1A. Furnace carbon black is rendered scorchresistant when used in vulcanizable rubber compositions by adding to the black between 0.1 and 10 parts per hundred parts by weight of said black a magnesium, lead, zinc or calcium salt of nitric acid, nitrous acid, a halic acid or a perhalic acid or a mixture of such salts, and heating the mixture to decompose the salt. The preferred range is 0.25 to 6 parts of salt per 100 parts by weight of black and the preferred salt is a nitrate. The salt may be added in the form of a solution, suspension or a dispersion in a liquid, which liquid may be water or an organic liquid and the liquid is preferably removed from the black prior to the thermal treatment to decompose the salt and the black may also be pelletized before or after said thermal treatment. |
