PURPOSE: A method for distinction kinds of disk is provided to improve a reading speed of an optical disk reading apparatus by reducing a required time for reading data according to disk change. CONSTITUTION: The method for distinction kinds of disk is comprising the steps of moving a focus lens from an initial position set in time of disk receiving to the disk, detecting a focus error in a movement of the disk, comparing the detected a focus error with a standard value classified in multistep successively, discriminating kinds of disk according to whether the detected value is included in the standard value of the corresponding step. The detected focus error is an amplitude of the focus error value and the standard value is set as a plural standard value for comparing with a radio frequency(RF) output of a compact disk(CD), a CD rewritable, a DVD single layer, and a DVD double layer, etc.
