In a process to form groups of products (4) on a packaging machine (1), the products are fed one after the other at a constant rate along a path (P) which passes through a formation chamber (12) station (S). At the formation chamber (12) station (S), the products (4) are filled into containers e.g. cartons. A first carton is filled, and a second empty carton is then placed on top of a first stack, during which time a third carton forming part of a second stack is filled. The filling operation of the second carton takes place to complete a full matrix stack group, while a fourth carton is placed on top of the third. The complete matrix is then removed from the stacking station. An Independent claim is included for an assembly to form the group of products.
