PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a reciprocating piston engine so that the sufficient lubrication of movable parts is guaranteed in all running postures of a reciprocating piston engine. SOLUTION: In a reciprocating piston engine, especially four-cycle internal combustion engine, a piston 4 movable in a vertical direction rotatingly drives a crankshaft 6 through a connecting rod 5 in a crank mechanism. The crankshaft 6 is supported in a crank case 3 including a lubricant for the crank mechanism. The chamber 27 including the lubricant 29 is formed in the crank case 3 by a partition wall at the next of a cylinder 2 as an oil collection chamber 11 for storing the lubricant with the posture turned the cylinder 2 upside down. The crank case 3 is formed in a tank shape and includes the lubricant. The cylinder 2 is inserted in the crank case 3 in an axial direction and the outer periphery wall 14 of the cylinder formes the partition of the oil collection chamber 11.
