PURPOSE: Error estimation method for a satellite communication system's channel modem and error estimation apparatus vary a phase of input audio data and set estimation value according to the variation in case of a burst mode, generate error estimation initial value based on the estimation value, and quickly perform error estimation operation. CONSTITUTION: Error estimation method of a channel modem multiplies a predetermined exponential function by a modulation frequency signal being input to a channel modem, performs a phase shift, calculates a magnitude of each frequency signal whose phase is shifted, stores the frequency data as a constant unit, and calculates average value of the frequency data. If the average value is higher than the set reference value, the method generates error estimation initial value. This initial value is used as a reference value for error estimation. The method applies the error estimation initial value to an error estimation device, and performs an error estimation operation on the basis of the error estimation initial value. Thereby, since the error estimation reference value is set, error estimation operation is quickly performed, and a data processing time is reduced.
