PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a camera compact by reducing the dimension of the camera in an up-and-down direction. SOLUTION: A photographing optical system 16 is arranged near the center of a camera body 14 and is equipped with a lens barrel 8 which can be extended and withdrawn. A film take-up chamber 20 is provided on either the right or the left side of the optical system 16 and a film loading chamber 22 is provided on the other side thereof inside the camera body 14. The lens barrel 18 is driven by the zoom motor 32 and extended and withdrawn through a zoom gear train 34. The motor 32 is disposed near to the front wall part of the camera body 14 on the upper wall part 2002 of the chamber 20. The motor 32 is equipped with a motor body 3202 and an output shaft 3204. The shaft 3204 projects toward the center in the right-and-left direction of the camera body 14. The motor body 3202 is near to the front wall part of the camera body 14 and is extended in the right-and-left direction of the camera 12 along the front wall part.
