PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently decontaminate metal structural materials, parts and the like in a nuclear reactor that are contaminated with radioactivity, simplify the processes of decontamination of radioactivity and decrease the yield of secondary wastes. SOLUTION: In a chemical decontamination method for a radioactive contaminant, dicarboxylic acid is used for the reductive dissolution of oxides capturing radioactivity, permanganate is used for reductive dissolution and reduction and oxidation are repeated at liquid temperatures of 100 deg.C or lower. By carrying out oxidation treatment with a permanganate solution at the outset and then adding dicarboxylic acid to treat permanganate, in other words, metal structural materials and parts in a reactor that are contaminated with radioactivity are chemically decontaminated with excessive dicarboxylic acid. Conventional purification processes and processes for removing and discharging the permanganate solution can be omitted by adding dicarboxylic acid directly to a permanganate solution.
