PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the image processor which can decide a document direction with high precision even when the document has characters in plural directions. SOLUTION: Input image data are divided into areas (S2), character parts in image data in the respective areas of the divided input image are extracted (S3), and the directions of the extracted characters are recognized (S4 to S7). When the character directions are recognized (S7), the divided areas are given priority levels and character recognition is carried out in the respective directions by the areas to judge the direction of the image data according to the direction and priority level where the character recognition result having the highest confidence is obtained.
