[Also in Division A5] Novel compounds of Formula I or an acid addition salt thereof wherein R1 is a straight or branched alkyl or alkenyl group of up to 6 carbon atoms, R2 is a divalent, saturated, straight or branched cyclic or acyclic hydrocarbon radical having 2 to 6 carbon atoms, R3 is H or a straight or branched alkyl group of up to 4 carbon atoms and R4 a C 1-4 n-alkyl group or a hydroxy- or C 1-4 alkoxy-n-(C 2-4 )-alkylene group, are prepared by reaction of a compound of Formula II with a compound of formula Z-R2-Q in which formulµ Q is halogen OH or -NR2R4, X, Y and Z are each halogen, OH, alkoxy, tosyloxy, -CN or amino or X and Y together form an imino group or alkali metal salt thereof or an oxo group at least one of X, Y and Z or X and Y together being a nitrogen containing group, the groups being selected to react together to give the required cyclic tertiary amino group, R 1 to R 4 are as above except that R 4 may also be H; and where Q is OH or halogen in the product introducing the group NR 3 R 4 which group in any product may be converted into a desired group by one or more appropriate after processes; optically active starting materials of Formula II may be used or the final products may be resolved. Succinic acids of Formula II above are resolved via the brucine salt and unsaturated group are optionally reduced.
