A filter element for an I.C. engine lubricating circuit comprises an annular, axially pleated sleeve 2 of resin-impregnated paper, internally supported by a perforate tube 3 and enclosed by a cellulose wadding or other sleeve 4, the whole being sealed to end caps 5, 6, of which cap 5 has apertures 12 opening into the space between sleeves 2,. 4. Apertures 12 are made in a raised bead 11, clear of the sealed ends of the pleats. Normal flow is inwards and sleeve 4 may be sheet material of finer porosity than sleeve 2. A proportion of incoming oil by-passes sleeve 4 and enters apertures 12, and as sleeve 4 clogs this proportion increases. Filtered oil leaves the tube 3 at one or both ends. Apertures 12 are Small enough to maintain a pressure difference across sleeve 4. Sleeve 4 may be pleated.</p> |
