PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain bis(hydroxyalkylalkylester)polysulfides capable of improving physical properties of a rubber composition and useful for a reactive coupling agent of rubber and silica filler by reacting a specific thiodipropionic acid with a specific diol. SOLUTION: This compound is a bis(hydroxyalkylalkylester)polysulfide expressed by formula I (R1 is an 1 to 8C alkylene; R2 is a 2 to 6C alkylene; x is an integer of 2 to 8), obtained reacting the compound of formula II (for example, 3,3'-dithiodipropionic acid, 3,3'-tetrathiodipropionic acid, 3,3'- hexathiodipropionic acid or the like) with the compound of formula III (for example, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, butanediol, pentanediol or the like). A rubber composition exhibiting a high stress-strain modulus or the like is obtained by adding 0.05 to 10.0 phr of the compound of formula I to the elastomer including olefinic unsaturation (for example, natural rubber, neoprene or the like).
