PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrolyzer capable of being continuously used for a long time and capable of preventing the shortening of the service life of an electrode. SOLUTION: A switch 45 is turned on or off under the control of a controller 41 to disconnect or connect the supply of power to the electrodes 53a and 53b through switches 47a and 47b from a DC power source 43. The switches 47a and 47b are turned on or off in linkage with each other under the control of the controller 41 to invert the polarity of the electrodes 53a and 53b supplied with power from the source 43. The polarity is inverted at intervals of a specified time (e.g. tens of minutes). Since the switch 49 is turned on or off under the control of the controller 41, an electrode short circuit is closed when the switch 45 is off and the electrode short circuit is opened when the switch 45 is on. The residual charge of the electrodes 53a and 53b discharged from the electrodes 53a and 53b is consumed by the resistive element 51 when the electrode short circuit is closed by the switch 49.
