The closure member 22 of a relief valve is provided with a loosely mounted skirt 25 which is displaced into the position shown by the unbalanced fluid forces set up in the valve during its first operation, which skirt then presents asymmetrical areas to the controlled fluid to equalize the forces exerted on the closure member during subsequent opening of the valve.
