PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a simple disposal to be performed by dissolving and decomposing a soluble or decomposable selective adsorbent for radioisotopes after bringing a liquid waste containing radioisotopes into contact with the adsorbent and allowing the adsorbent to adsorb the radioisotopes. SOLUTION: A liquid waste from medical institutions and the like containing radioisotopes is treated by using an adsorbent obtained by uniting a substance or a functional group that adsorbs radioisotopes selectively with a macromolecular compound like cellulose. For instance, if human urine containing Na131I is applied to a column filled with an anion adsorbent obtained by reacting a glycidyl trimethyl ammonium chloride with cellulose particles, the 131I in the human urine is adsorbed. The anion adsorbent that has adsorbed 131I dissolves by being treated with cellulase, for example. By using adsorbents including each of the prescribed functional groups, liquid wastes containing such radioisotopes as Sr, Y, Re, Sm and Tc can also be treated. |
