PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sinker for a circular knitting machine, capable of being operated without trouble, even when a knitting speed is large, while a tight space state in a sinker ring is considered, and to provide a selection device. SOLUTION: This sinker has a selection element 12 equipped with a controllable lifting butt 20 and rotatably received in a depression 11 so that at least one portion of the selection elements 12 can be placed at a position where the lifting butt 20 is retreated from the front surface side 8 of a shaft 2 to the back surface side 5 of the shaft or at a position where the lifting butt 20 is forward projected from the front surface side 8 of the shaft 2, and a spring 21 for energizing the selection element 12 toward one of the two positions. A sinker assembly containing the sinker has a downward cam part 70 for rotating the selection element 12 against the force of the spring 21 and allowing the anchor surface 72 of the selection element to approach a selection member 71.
