PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a safe battery having sufficient capacity with battery internal pressure markedly inhibited from rising, by forming an alkali-repellent film of a water-soluble and non-ionic cellulose ether derivative, partially or totally on a surface of an electrode. SOLUTION: A plate-shaped hydrogen-storage alloy electrode is immersed in, coated with, or sprayed with a water solution of a water-soluble, non-ionic cellulose ether derivative, and then heated and dried, and a hydrogen-storage alloy electrode is provided having a film of the alkali-repellent water solution of the cellulose ether derivative formed thereon and closely stuck uniformly and firmly over the entire surfaces of the electrode plate. The electrode is used as a negative electrode, a nickel hydroxide electrode plate is used as a positive electrode, an electrode group made up by interposing a separator made of nylon, etc., between the positive and negative electrodes is housed, as it is, in a rectangular battery can, or wound and housed in a cylindrical battery can, a small amount of alkaline electrolytic solution is injected, and the battery can fit with back cover impregnated in the electrode plate group by a lid and sealed up, and thus a sealed storage battery is manufactured.
