PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the thickness restriction of book original that becomes a read object by enabling reading of an image, even if the height of original is a prescribed value or more. SOLUTION: The height data of detected original is compared with a prescribed value, and when the height data is prescribed value or more (YES in S15), a platen is shifted downward (S16). Furthermore, the height data of the original is detected, and when the height data is within the prescribed value (NO in S15), main scanning is started (S18).
