摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reflection type liquid crystal display which can be manu factured with substrate spaces compatible to a transmission type TN display, can utilize high luminance value and high contrast value and has comparatively small wavelength dependency in light modulation. SOLUTION: The reflection type liquid crystal display is formed of a polarizer and at least one retardation layer, a liquid crystal cell has a first substrate with a transparent electrode and a second substrate with a reflection electrode and liquid crystals are encapsulated between the first substrate and the second substrate. At the time of encapsulating, the liquid crystal display exhibits a double refraction effect even in a voltage nonimpression state and in a voltage impression state. The liquid crystal and the retardation layer 13 are constituted or adjusted to each other so that wavelength dependency of double refraction of the liquid crystal and the retardation layer 13 is substantially compensated. Therefore the liquid crystal display of the retardation layer 13 having large cell spaces and corresponding thickness can be constituted without degradation of wavelength dependency of double refraction index (scattering).
