1501242 Battery plate paster GATES RUBBER CO 21 April 1975 [23 April 1974] 20221/77 Divided out of 1501241 Heading D1L A battery pasting apparatus for pasting lead-acid battery plates in a continuous manner by application of a thixotropic lead paste on to a foraminous lead substrate which is moved substantially horizontally comprises. a supply of the lead substrate, a supply of the lead paste, a nozzle adapted to be positioned above the substrate for discharging the paste at a predetermined rate of flow on to the substrate without substantially deforming the substrate, a set of opposed driven rolls spaced from the nozzle to receive within its nip the pasted substrate and to compress the paste within the interstices of the substrate and a cutter for severing individual plates from the continuous length of pasted substrate. In the apparatus shown the substrate 16 is supplied from the spool 18 and delivered beneath the nozzle 10. The nozzle 10 does not bear with any appreciable downward force upon the moving grid 16 and may be able to pivot freely about its inlet position 12. A thin ribbon of paste 20 deposited upon the grid is of sufficient viscosity to prevent appreciable permeation downwardly through the interstices of the grid. As the thus pasted grid 20 is moved to the left it encounters the nip 22 of juxtaposed pasting rolls 24, 26. The two rolls are preferably driven at essentially the same speed although they may be driven at different individual speeds. The rolls may be of steel and may be prevented from adhering to the grid by interposed layers of a thick flexible, stick-resistant material 28 and 30. This may be of paper. This material may be omitted if the rolls are rendered sufficiently non-adherent. The substrate is then passed to a plate slitter 40 and plate cutter 38 for fabrication of the final electrode structures 42. |
