The transporting track has a sorting area (100) for preforms (1) supported only on their undersides. Faulty preforms detected at the inspection station initiate a signal which is fed to a sorting mechanism (13) for moving the faulty preform out of the row. An Independent claim is made for a process for manufacturing the bottles. Preferred Features: A side guide (9,11) guides the preform in the sorting area (100) and is profiled to enable the faulty preform to be swiveled in a vertical plane (V) through 50 deg .
