Bands (14,14') of yarn (10) are wound under the control of a pressure sensing roller (15). At the start of winding the first band (14) the roller (15) is at a distance (s) from the warp beam and the measuring phase (23) is started automatically as soon as the yarn layer (16) is thick enough to start rotating the sensing roller (15).
