PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound scarcely having crop injury to rice plant of an important crop, having an excellent herbicidal activity to various kinds of weeds such as wild milled and useful as an agrochemical product, esp. as a herbicide. SOLUTION: This compound is expressed by formula I (wherein, R1 and R2 are each H, a lower alkyl or combined with each other into a saturated ring; Ar is naphthyl, benzothiazol-2-yl, or the like), e.g. N-(α,α- dimethylbenzyl)-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran-2-carboxylic acid amide. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran-2-carboxylic acid or its reactive derivative with an amine of formula II (e.g.α,α- dimethylbenzylamine or the like) directly or in a solvent such as dichloromethane pref. at a temp. of 0-100 deg.C or at the boiling temperature of the solvent, usually for 1-24 h.
