The present invention provides nucleic acids which will selectively hybridize with nucleic acid present in virtually all vaccine-related and wildtype polioviruses of a particular serotype, but will not hybridize with nucleic acids present in polioviruses of either of the other two serotypes, with nucleic acids present in nonpolio enteroviruses, or with nucleic acids present in other viruses. These nucleic acids may be employed as primers in reverse transcription/polymerase chain reactions to specifically detect the presence of one of the three serotypes of vaccine-related or wildtype poliovirus in a clinical sample containing nucleic acids. These nucleic acids will not detect the presence of the other two poliovirus serotypes, or the presence of nonpolio enteroviruses, or the presence of other viruses, in the sample. The present invention also provides methods for specifically detecting the presence of one of the three serotypes of poliovirus in a clinical sample containing nucleic acids with the nucleic acids of the present invention in an in vitro reverse transcription/polymerase chain reaction. |
