A magnetic immersion lens comprises an inner pole-piece (10) and an outer pole-piece (11). The inner pole-piece (10) has a through-bore (15) and protrudes beyond the outer pole-piece (11). The protruding part of the inner pole-piece includes at a truncated tip (16) having sides inclined at an angle a to a longitudinal axis X-X of the lens and the outer pole-piece (11) also has sides inclined the angle a . This configuration facilitates irradiation of and/or access to a sample mounted in front of the tip substantially at the intersection I of the longitudinal axis X-X and a projection of the inclined sides onto the axis. A charged particle analyser incorporating the magnetic immersion lens is also described. |
