Explosive or energy-containing materials are ignited by an oxidizable metal in the form of a layer heated by current passage or in the form of powder in an igniting charge container. Explosive or energy-containing materials are ignited especially by a metal such as aluminum, magnesium, zirconium or zinc, which is stable at normal temperatures and which is in the form of either (a) a layer on an electrically non-conducting, poorly conducting or semiconducting material, the layer being heated by current passage for reaction with air or other oxygen source to release exothermic energy especially in the form of hot gas and/or hot particles; or (b) a powder or a powder pressing in an igniting charge container which is ignited to release hot gas or hot particles for delivery to a pyrotechnic to be ignited.
