PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material suitable for production of articles requiring high performance such as cutting tools particularly kitchen knives and knives for occupational use used under severe conditions, custom knives for hobby use, and cutters for industrial use, that is, a P/M steel for cutting tool having high toughness as well as wear resistance and easy of working of the edge of a cutting tool. SOLUTION: The steel has an alloy composition consisting of, by weight, 1.5-4.0% C, <=2.0% Si, <=2.0% Mn, 10-30% Cr, 0.2-4.0% Mo, 0.1-5.0% V, and the balance essentially Fe and satisfying F(C)=Cr+15.5C>=40 and F(H)=3.8 C-0.62Cr>=-5. Further, the maximum carbide grain diameter Dc is controlled to 2.0-5.0μm. It is preferable that the composition of carbides in the steel satisfies the condition that the value of (M7 C3 +M23 C6 )/(MC+M6 C) is 0.5-4.0 by volume ratio.
