PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a producing method with improved production efficiency by which a single layer carbon nanotube can be stably produced. SOLUTION: While a vacuum chamber 11 is evacuated with a rotary pump 12, helium is introduced through a gas supply port 19 to produce a rare gas atmosphere. AC arc discharge is produced between a metal-added carbon electrode 13 produced by adding a single metal in carbon and a metal-added carbon electrode 14 produced by adding another single metal different from the metal above mentioned by using a discharge power supply device 17. Carbon and metals evaporate from both electrodes and the metals form an alloy to act as a catalyst for the carbon to produce a single layer carbon nanotube.
