The method involves determining a measurement value representing the actual value of the biometric characteristic and producing the value in a terminal; transferring at least a subset of first reference values dependent on a predefined demand value for the biometric characteristic from a data medium to the terminal; combining data derived from the measurement values with the subset in the terminal, transferring the result to the data medium and checking the results of the combination in the data medium. An Independent claim is also included for a system for checking a biometric characteristic.
