The invention relates to a method and load calculator to calculate the space-time temperature distribution in or on an electron (3) irradiated anode (1) of an X-ray tube (16). The load calculator (8) calculates the short rise in temperature that occurs in a surface layer (11) in and around a focal spot (10) of the anode (1) of the X-ray tube (16) both during and immediately after irradiation of said focal spot (10) by the electrons.The load calculator (8) subsequently calculates the long-term temperature distribution in the total volume of the anode (1) by taking heat diffusion emanating from the focal spot and heat dissipation (21) emanating from the surface (19) of the anode (1) into account. The results of both calculations are added together in order to determine the temperature distribution on and in the anode (1). They are indicated on a display device (22) and used to control the X-ray tube (16).
