<p>A mold for use in a gas-assisted injection molding system includes a gas pin assembly (30) which can be readily removed from one mold half (14) in an open position of a mold wherein a porous insert (48) of the assembly can also be readily removed from the housing (32) of the assembly (30) for easy servicing. The housing (32) of the assembly has an elongated aperture (40) formed therethrough in communication with a gas passageway (18) in the mold to permit the flow of gas therethrough. The porous insert (48) is positioned in the aperture (40). The insert (48) permits the flow of gas therethrough but prevents the passage of molten plastic therethrough. The assembly (30) also includes a holding device preferably in the form of a set screw (42) which has a gas hole (44) formed completely therethrough to permit the flow of gas therethrough. The set screw (42) is threadedly secured within the housing (32) to hold the insert (48) stationary within the aperture (40) and to permit ready removal of the insert (48) from the housing (32) after the set screw (42) has been removed from the housing (32). Three different embodiments of the gas pin assembly are disclosed.</p> |
