A chuck (10) for use with a manual or powered driver having a rotatable drive shaft is provided. A plurality of jaws (18) are slidably positionned in a body member (16). Each jaw (18) has a jaw face (32) formed on one side and threads (34) formed on the opposite side. Each jaw face (32) in-cludes a first ridge (74) substantially parallel to the chuck axis (78). The first ridge (74) is offset from, and substantially parallel to, a plane (79) including the jaw axis (80) and the chuck axis (78). A second ridge (76) is substantially parallel to the first ridge (74) but offset from the plane (79) opposite the first ridge (74). A third ridge (82) is disposed between the first (74) and second ridges (76) and has a peak on the opposite side from the chuck axis (78) of a plane including the peaks of the first (74) and second ridges (76).
