PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color liquid crystal display device suited to assigning intensity levels. SOLUTION: In this device A, a signal electrode member 6 in which a signal electrode 3 and an alignment layer 4 are sequentially formed on a transparent substrate 1 and a scanning electrode member 7 in which the height of a light shielding layer 11 is made higher than a coloring layer 10 in forming the coloring layer 10 and the light shielding layer 10 projectingly on the transparent substrate 8, an insulation film 12 is coated further and a scanning electrode 13 and an alignment layer 15 are sequentially formed are oppositely disposed through chiral nematic liquid crystal 17 so as to cross the signal electrode 3 and the scanning electrode 13 and a rectangular picture element area 16 is formed. Then, the chiral nematic liquid crystal 17 is provided with a twisted structure in an initial state, a voltage for generating Freedericksz transition is applied in the initial state and two metastable states different from the initial state are provided by the difference of the voltage to be applied thereafter. |
