Energy absorbing mounting for vehicle bumper

An impact absorbing mounting eg. for a vehicle bumper, includes a hollow element normally compressed into a coaxial arrangement for a compact fitting. One end of the hollow element is connected to a gas generator which provides a gas charge released by the impact protection system on the vehicle. This extends the hollow mounting and holds the bumper further away from the vehicle body, to better absorb impacts. The rolled construction hollow element is made of thin metal. The system can be improved by having different levels of gas pressure to protect against different of anticipated impact.
