The vehicle has a conventional break-in detector (2) which sounds a local alarm, e.g. by sounding the horn. The alarm signal is also transmitted (1) to a remote receiver (3) held by the driver. The receiver may be combined with a mobile phone or can be attached to the key ring or even the ignition key itself.
