PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a high-molecular-weight, high-melting-pointα-olefin polymer capable of extrusion and injection molding in high yields by using a specified transition metal compound as the catalyst component for the polymerization of anα-olefin. SOLUTION: The transition metal compound used is represented by the formula (wherein R<1> , R<2> , R<4> , and R<5> , which are independent of each other, are each hydrogen, a 1-10C hydrocarbon group, or the like; R<3> and R<6> , which are independent of each other, are each a 3-10C saturated or unsaturated divalent hydrocarbon group which forms a ring fused with the five-membered ring to which it is bonded; R<7> and R<8> which are independent of each other, are each a 1-20C hydrocarbon group, a 1-20C halohydrocarbon group, or the like; Q is silicon, germanium, or tin; A is a 3-12C divalent unsaturated hydrocarbon group which, together with the Q to which it is bonded, forms a ring; R<a> is a 1-10C saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon group; (m) and (n), which are independent of each other, are each an integer of 0-20; (l) is an integer of 0-22; X and Y, which are independent of each other, are each a 1-20C hydrocarbon group, or the like; and M is a transition metal of group 4, 5, or 6 in the periodic table).
