PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide display elements permitting to exceed limits of contrast and definition caused by the fact that a lot of active elements are formed on a large area substrate. SOLUTION: A silicon integrated chip 3 is formed which has picture elements 2 and a drive signal generating function of the picture elements 2 on a multi- layer wiring substrate 1 on which a multi-layer wiring group 5 is formed on an insulating substrate. Thus, the silicon integrated chip 3 is electrically connected with the picture element electrodes 2 via multi-layer wiring group 5. And, it is possible to achieve liquid crystal display elements with a sharp contrast by providing a liquid crystal layer between the picture element electrodes 2 and an opposed substrate.
